Mission Networks of the Future: 5G Standalone as the Foundation for Secure Defense Connectivity

ABSTRACT:

The Department of War is advancing toward a fully software-defined, standalone 5G core to support next-generation defense communications. Unlike non-standalone architectures that rely on legacy LTE control, 5G Standalone networks deliver end-to-end slicing, ultra-low latency, and mission-critical resilience. This session explores how Standalone 5G is transforming defense operations — from base connectivity to autonomous systems — through secure network isolation, AI-driven orchestration, and interoperability with emerging Open RAN and satellite assets.

SPEAKERS:

  • Andrew Thiessen - Head of 5G/xG, MITRE

  • Rory O'Toole - VP Global Sales Telecommunications, Druid Software

  • Drosten Fisher - Head of Navy Business, Cape

  • Don Hawkins - Senior Director Engineering, Mission 5G, Dell Technologies
